The Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Gallery is one of London’s must-see art museums.

The collection stretches from the early Renaissance into the 20th century and is displayed in the elegant setting of Somerset House, one of the city’s most dynamic cultural venues.

The Gallery is particularly renowned for its unrivalled collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh and Gauguin and the largest collection of Cézannes in the UK.

The Gallery also holds an outstanding collection of drawings and prints and fine works of sculpture and decorative arts.

The Courtauld Gallery and Courtauld Shop are closed until late 2021 while we undertake a major transformation project called Courtauld Connects.

This ambitious project will enable The Courtauld Gallery to significantly improve our visitor experience by putting accessibility at the heart of everything we do. The following provides some information about the Gallery closure. Further information about the wider Courtauld Connects project can be found here.

At the Heart of a Centre for Teaching and Research

The gallery is at the heart of The Courtauld Institute of Art, one of the world’s leading centres for the study of art history and conservation.

Elegant Surroundings in the Heart of London

The Courtauld Gallery is located at Somerset House in the heart of London.

Somerset House is a spectacular 18th century building on the banks of the Thames. Once the home of the Royal Academy of Art, the galleries are an elegant and intimate space in which to enjoy the collection.

The Courtauld Gallery plays an important role in the capital’s cultural life and is part of London’s Museum Mile

A Collection of Collections

The collection of The Courtauld Gallery is the result of a series of gifts and bequests by some of the leading collectors of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Samuel Courtauld and Count Antoine Seilern.

This has created a collection of great depth and quality which retains some of the character of its private origins.
